How a silver IRA works
There's no separate account type called a "silver IRA." It's a self-directed IRA, the same structure used for gold, that happens to hold silver. You open it through a specialist custodian, fund it by transfer, rollover or contribution, and the silver is shipped to an approved depository. You can hold silver alone or alongside gold, platinum and palladium in one account. For the full mechanics, see our gold IRA guide; every rule there applies here too.
Why investors add silver
- Lower price per ounce: at around $57.50 an ounce in mid-October 2026, silver is far easier to buy in small, flexible amounts than gold at over $4,000.
- Industrial demand: solar panels, electronics, batteries and medical uses consume a large share of supply each year.
- Bigger swings: silver has historically risen faster than gold in strong metals markets. It has also fallen faster in weak ones.
The gold-to-silver ratio
The ratio tells you how many ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold. In October 2026 it sits a little above 70. Some investors use it as a rough gauge: when the ratio is high, silver looks cheap relative to gold, and when it's low, gold looks cheap. It's a rule of thumb rather than a timing signal, and the ratio can stay stretched for years.
Which silver products qualify
Silver must be at least 99.9% fine and come from a recognized mint or approved refiner. Common choices include:
- American Silver Eagle (US Mint)
- Canadian Silver Maple Leaf (Royal Canadian Mint)
- Austrian Silver Philharmonic
- British Silver Britannia
- Silver bars from approved refiners, usually 10 oz, 100 oz or 1 kilo
Pre-1965 US "junk" silver coins are only 90% silver and don't qualify. See our guides to silver coins and silver bars for how to choose between them.
Our recommended provider's free kit covers both metals, rollover steps and storage. Best fit if you have $50,000 or more to diversify.

Account fees are the same as for gold: a setup fee, an annual custodian fee and storage. Two things work differently with silver:
- Premiums are higher as a percentage. Minting a one-ounce coin costs about the same whether it's gold or silver, so on a $57 coin that cost is a much bigger share of the price.
- Storage can cost more. Some depositories charge by value and some by space. Silver takes up roughly 70 times the room of gold per dollar, so ask how your depository bills.
Risks to understand
- Silver can drop 30% or more in a downturn, especially when industrial demand slows.
- Like all metals, it pays no income.
- Large silver orders can take longer to sell back than gold of the same value.
Frequently asked questions
Can I hold silver and gold in the same IRA?
Yes. One self-directed IRA can hold any mix of the four eligible metals.
Is a silver IRA better than a gold IRA?
Neither is better in general. Gold has been steadier; silver offers more upside with more risk. Many people hold both.
Can I roll silver over from one IRA to another?
Yes. Metals can move between custodians in kind, without being sold, through a direct transfer.
