Palladium IRA: A Specialist Metal for Experienced Investors

Palladium can be held in an IRA, but it behaves more like an industrial commodity than a safe haven. Here's what to know before you add it.

What palladium is used for

Palladium is a silvery metal in the platinum group. Its main job is cleaning exhaust in gasoline-engine catalytic converters, which accounts for the large majority of demand. Smaller amounts go into electronics, dentistry and chemical processing. Very little is bought for jewelry or as an investment compared with gold.

Mine supply is concentrated in a few countries, chiefly Russia and South Africa, so sanctions, strikes or power shortages there can move the price quickly.

Why the price swings so much

Because palladium depends on one industry, its price reacts to car sales, emissions rules and the shift toward electric vehicles, which don't need catalytic converters. Palladium traded around $1,130 an ounce in mid-October 2026, well below the record highs it set earlier in the decade. That history is a reminder that a metal with narrow demand can fall a long way.

How a palladium IRA works

It's the same self-directed IRA structure used for gold: a specialist custodian, funding by transfer, rollover or contribution, and storage at an approved depository. You can hold palladium on its own or mixed with other metals in one account. Our gold IRA guide walks through the setup in detail.

Products that qualify

Not every dealer stocks palladium for IRAs. If yours doesn't, you may need a second dealer or to skip it.

Start with the core

Most metals investors build around gold first. Our recommended provider's free kit explains how a gold IRA rollover works. Best fit if you have $50,000 or more to diversify.

Who palladium suits

Palladium can make sense as a small satellite position for an investor who already holds gold and wants exposure to industrial metals. It's a poor fit if your goal is stability, because it has historically moved far more than gold in both directions.

Questions to ask before buying

Frequently asked questions

Is palladium rarer than gold?

Annual mine output is much smaller than gold's, but rarity alone doesn't set the price. Industrial demand does most of the work.

Can I switch from palladium to gold inside my IRA?

Yes. You can sell the palladium inside the account and buy gold without any tax, since the money never leaves the IRA.
