Platinum IRA: When It Fits and When It Doesn't

Platinum once cost more than gold. Today it trades at well under half the price. Here's what drives it and how to hold it inside a retirement account.

From premium metal to discount

For long stretches before the mid-2010s, an ounce of platinum cost more than an ounce of gold. That reversed as demand for diesel cars fell and investors favored gold. In mid-October 2026, platinum traded around $1,645 an ounce against roughly $4,160 for gold. Some investors see that gap as a value opportunity; others see it as a sign that platinum's main markets are shrinking. Both views have reasonable arguments behind them.

What drives the price

How a platinum IRA works

A platinum IRA is a standard self-directed IRA holding platinum instead of, or alongside, other metals. The custodian, funding options and depository rules are identical to a gold IRA; our gold IRA guide covers them step by step.

Products that qualify

Fewer dealers stock platinum than gold or silver, and the gap between buy and sell prices tends to be wider. Ask for both numbers before ordering.

Platinum versus palladium

The two are often grouped together, but they're not interchangeable. Palladium is tied more tightly to gasoline cars, while platinum has broader uses in jewelry and industry plus the hydrogen angle. Both are more volatile than gold. If you want one industrial metal next to your gold, platinum's wider demand base makes it the steadier of the two, though not by a large margin. Our palladium guide has the details.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hold platinum and gold in the same IRA?

Yes. A single self-directed IRA can hold any combination of the four eligible metals.

Is platinum a good inflation hedge?

It has been less consistent than gold, because industrial demand often matters more to its price than inflation does.
